Maya Nishimura was born in Tokyo, Japan. She grew up in both Tokyo and San Jose, California, adjusting to the different cultures every time she moved. She feels more attached to the life in California and moves to Los Angeles, where she now resides, to go to OTIS College of Arts and Design. After receiving her BFA in furniture design and architecture, she came across the lost wax technique, a perfect medium for expressing all of her ideas and her love of creating them with her own hands.
“I knew that I was the happiest when creating things with my hands. I also knew that I was going to make my own wedding band one day,” says Maya who is now married to her husband, who has named her line “ileava,” a word that describes the highest quality of something that is pure.
Ileava design was established in 2003. It is her little world, where her childhood memories, everyday influences and dreams become miniature sculptures that everyone can wear. |
